Residential proxies route your traffic through real household IP addresses handed out by consumer ISPs, so target sites see an ordinary broadband customer instead of a server.
A residential proxy network is a pool of consumer devices — routers, phones, desktop apps — that forward requests on your behalf. Because the exit IP belongs to a retail ISP, its reputation score sits far above any datacenter range, which is why residential IPs still get through anti-bot walls that block cloud ASNs outright.
Pools are sourced through SDK partnerships, opt-in bandwidth-sharing apps and peer networks. You authenticate by user:pass or IP whitelist against a single gateway endpoint, then steer the exit with parameters for country, state, city, ASN and session ID. Rotating sessions issue a fresh IP on every request; sticky sessions hold one IP for 1–30 minutes so logins and carts survive.
Use residential whenever the target scores IP reputation: search results, marketplaces, sneaker and ticket sites, travel aggregators, social platforms and any login flow. Skip it for bulk crawling of tolerant sites — you will pay per-GB rates for pages datacenter IPs fetch fine.
